TRADE IN NEW PLYMOUTH.
The Department of labor in its niimtlily bulletin lias the following in relerence, to Now Plymouth: — There Has been a very noticeable improvement in the retail trade during the month. Employers in all branches express satisfaction with the amount of huroncss that has been done, and are looking forward with confidence to a continuance of same during the summer months, lteady money seenu plentifu at present. Manufacturers m all branche* have had a very satisfactory month. tailoring, dressmaking, and lioot and shoe manufacturing brunches have been exceptionally busy. Tailors ami dressmakers are quite unable to till order* in time, although overtime has lieeu worked in some cases oil every available night. Cheese and butter factories are all showing an increased output compared with former years. ' l( *\ are iu many cast* placed at a great disadvantage owing to shortage of hands, (ireat difficulty is being experienced 111 obtaining sufficient hands to meet requirements. There is an opening m this district for a large number of youug men in the cheese and butter factories, and at milking and general lann work. I here was only one application for employment during the month, and eniploj - ment was found on the date of application. . . Building trades —Carpentering, paintin", and plumbing trades are all busy; aU.liands are lully employed. Although no applications have been received 110111 bricklavers lor employment, there is very little work of this class going on at present. It would be unwise for bricklayers to come here in anticipation of obtaining work. Kn"ineering trade—Very regular. jNo applications liave been received for employment during the month; local laboi in sufficient to meet demands at present. lioot trade—Factories are very busy. There is still great difficulty in obtaining sullicient bovs and girls. Clothing trade—Factories are very busv indeed; tailor* and dressmakers particularly, so. A good deal of overtime is being worked. . l!etail trade—Very satisfactory business m being done-at present in all branches.
Miscellaneous Saddlers, carriagebuilders, blacksmiths, fiash and door lactone*, and lmtter-box factories are all doiuj! good business, with eveij pio-put of a continuance during the summer months. Unskilled labor-All branches arc veiy busv. Men arc wanted for buKhfclling. roadmaking, miking, and for butter ami cheese factories. Apparently it is quite impossible to obtain sufficient hands to ffTeot requirements. There are splendid opportunities offering for strong young men in the back country at bushlelling and general contract work; the living >•> not expensive, and really good wages are being made.
