THE BAND ROTUNDA.

To the Editor. Sir,—Lately there has been some talk • of shifting the lund rotunda from the Esplanade, or Kawaroa i'urk, to some more central position. And now you come in with a leader which mentions the same thing. \uu say, and rightly, too, that "what is sadly needed is a suitable promenade by the sea artistically laid out and lighted in the evening by -electric lamps in more than one color." A few sentences later you pay:

"Why the handstand was erected in a veritable wilderness of .sand and scrub is a question- that, puzsje* even the townspeople—visitors give up tile query iu despair."' Now, these two thoughts are diametrically opposed to one allother. Given the fluids for a promenade, where is it to be? From the baths to the harbor, of course; where else* Passing right alongside this self-same band rotunda. That's what our wise and far-seeing councillors had in view when they erected the band rotunda. The reserve was to be beautified, and the esplanade extended right out to Motnroa. Unfortunately, the scheme is still only ""in view." Are we always to be content to keep it steadily in view, or are we going to wake up soon and get the work in hand? To return to the band rotunda. Where is a more suitable site! At present it is placed quite close enough to the more popular portion of the town. It is handy to our esplanade and to the beach. And surely people can and will walk a few hundred yards for a band concert! If it is in a ' wilderneis" it is far more simple to reclaim tlie wilderness than to shift the rotunda.—l am, etc., WEST END.
