ACCIDENTS AND FATALITIES.
INQUEST ON TAIAROA'S DEATH. l'er Press Association. Dunedin Last Night. An inquest was held at Port Chalmers to-day into the circumstances surrounding the death by. drowning of John Taiaroa on New Years' Eve and resulted in a verdict of ''accidentally drowned" being returned. _ It was evident that in the darkness Taiaroa either tripped over a line or slipped on the wet deck when making his way from the stern to the how ol the motor boat in order to reach the landing stage, and fell overboard, being carried away by the strong current.
Christshureh, Last Night. William Moon, caretaker of the Victoria Park, who ivas badly burned in yesterday a grass lire on the Cashmere Hills, is progressing favorably at the hospital. x
At the Stanley road, Midhirst, on Wednesday afternoon, Constable C. Weasel, of Stratford, was the victim of a strange but serious accident. He was driving in a trap with Mr E. Cate, when a burning limb about twenty feet long from a standing tree, fell, striking Constable lileasel a slanting blow on the right -shoulder, throwing him violently forward on to the front, of the trap, where his forehead came in contact with an ironbark rail, which was smashed by the force of the contact. A nastv wound was inflicted on the right temple, about two and a-half inches long, and extending to the bone. A smaller wound was also inflicted over the right eve. 'He was taken to Mr Jolin ITaye-s' residence while Mr McCarry ,of EJtliam. who was' riding b.v at the time, galloped for cn aid On the way he met Mr Sidncv itl who was riding a fast horse, and the latter rode in to Midhirst and telephoned for a doctor.
