ACCIDENTS AND FATALITIES.

William ll«H'ernaii, aged 1H years, .nil) °f Mr, Hefl'eruan, South Dunedin, was the victim of a shooting accident at Tuapeka Flat yesterday while out rabbitshooting. His right arm was shattered and had to be amputated at the elbow. Blenheim, Last Sight. A distressing bathing fatality occurred yesteray afternoon, by which Jir'i. Arthur Farnmr, 37 'years of age, her daughter llona," aged 17, and Zita Shaw, aged 12, lost their lives. A party of ladies and children were bathing in the Opawa river outside the town, when Zita Shaw was carried off her feet, and Jirs. and Mies Farrnar went to her assistance, but were also carried away. Zita Shaw's mother, a good swimmer, niiftjg Ijorrjic attempts at rescue, and almost succeeded' wif|f lie'r daughter, and, after failing with her, attended Jfrs. I'arnwr, but unsuccessfully. Jlrs, Shaw then tried to recover the bodies by diving. The bodies were shortly after recovered by men who arrived after the alarm was given. Lengthy efforts at resuscitation failed. At the inquest to-day a verdict of accidental death by drowning was returned. Mrs. Shaw's bravery and the prompt action of the men and police were commended by the jury, who were alrfo of opinion that the Council should provide proper swimming baths. The funeral of the three victims was held this afternoon. Kdward Barry, lfl years of agf, was loading sheaves on a dray 011 a farm yesterday forenoon, when the load slipped, and Barry fell, the Wheel of the dray passing over bis chest. I)r. Walker held out no hopes of recovery, and Barry died this morning.
