ACCIDENTS AND FATALITIES.
X'er Press Association. Dimedin, Tuesday. MY. Harry Buck-land, runholder, of Waikouaiti, 47 years of age, ilmpped dead in the city this morning Death was due to heart failure. Wellington. Tuesday. Ah able-bodied si'aniaii named .iolm Hausim dropped dead owing to heartfailure during the passage of the Talnno from Sydney to Wellington. The fatality occurred oil .Friday morning, and the liody was buried at sea 011 the evening of the same day. Deceased, wlio was 35 years of age, signed on the, vessel at Dimedin ten days ago, and was a native of "Sunderland. Some time during last night ail elderly woman, who has not lieen identified, fell over a el ill at linvlis's qmirrv, Island Hay, and was killed, her neck being broken.
John Sims, aged 40, a single man, climbed to the top of the lamp-post on Rona Hay wharf this morning, intending to make a long dive into the water. In the descent he struck the edge of the wharf, lie sank out of sight. The body has not yet been recovered.
C'hristeliurch, Last Night. The body of George Fuller, a bootmaker, who has been missing since 20th November, was found to-day at Sumner in a lupin patch. A revolver was found liv the side of the body. Wellington, Last Night. The police have been in formed that Margaret Konaldson Sharpe, wife of ■lames Sharpe, a eorndealcr at Lower Unit, hanged herself to-night. At an inquest on the body of Mrs. Edith Green, which was found at the foot of a cliff at Island Bay, a verdict of accidental death was relumed. The evidence showed that deceased's home was destroyed by tire sonic lime ago, and this had affected her mental condition.
Napier, Last Night. A man named George Valentine Cliatterton Johnston was arrested at Taradale on Tuesday for drunkenness, and when brought to Napier was found to be in a very weak state. He was admitted to the hospital, where he died on Christmas Day, it is supposed from the ell'ects of alcoholic poisoning. Jnvercargill, Last Night.
The holidays were marred, to some extent by a motor accident near Wallacelown, eight miles from Invereargill, on Christ mas Day. A motor party of three ladies and two children, driven by E. J. dimming, were returning from a trip to liiverton. At a turn leading to the bridge over the New River, dimming, an inexperienced driver, saw he was not taking the turn properly, and to avoid clashing into the bridge, turned off, inlending' to run the car parallel with the river bank, lie lost his head, however, and did not turn sufficiently, with the result that the car shot straight over; the eight-foot bank, aud landed squarely on its wheels in the stream. Fortunately the water was not deep where tincar landed, and the occupants, who had jumped or fallen clear of the car, scrambled out, with the exception of one child and a young lady, Daisy Lumsden, who tloated down stream to deep water, dimming waded in and rescued the child, but was unable to swim, and could not reach the young lady, who gradually sank and was drowned in sight of'the parly. The body of the uufiirtimate girl, who was 21 years of age. was recovered two hours later. A veil twisted round her face suggests that it obscured her sight when the accident occurred, causing her to struggle towards deep instead of shallow water. At the inquest to-day, the jury found that deceased met her death by drowning as the result of a motor accident due to the want of experience of the driver. They added that the. approach was one of peculiar difficulty, and that dimming .did everything in his power to avert the accident. Auckland, Last Night. The body of a young man named Small McDonald, of Devonport, was found in the harbor near the dock. Henry Newman had his skull fractured through stepping off a moving tramcar in the wrong direction. His condition is serious. He arrived from Taranaki a few days ago. A peculiar incident happened in Queen street to a young man. Annie Irwin was passing along with two companions, and some words were exchanged between them and some men standing by the footpath. Irwin is alleged to have returned and threatened to break her umbrella over them if they molested her in the street. One of the men, named Hudson, denied interfering, whereupon she poked her parasol at him, and the thin steel end wounded him in the neck. The woman was arrested. Napier, Last Night. A man named Campbell Simson, a cook employed at Lougland's station, near Hastings, attempted to commit suicide by cutting his throat on Tuesday, but lie was discovered soon after the attempt and taken to the Napier llospiItal, where he is improving. He is stated to be suffering from heart disease.
Dimedin, Last Night. Mr. Simon McDonald, a very old resident of Dimedin, died early this morning. Deceased was 71 years of age. lie carried mi business as a blacksmith for many years, retiring a few years ago. lie look a keen interest in the Caledonian Soijjety, church work, and acclimatisation matters. He leaves a widow and grown-up family. William Harris, who for many years carried on business as a bootmaker and importer in Princes-street, died rather suddenly last, night. He was one of the besl respected business men of the city.
11. Lurchin, second ullieor of the steamer Delphic, (lied very suddenly oi\ hoard the steamer Kumnra while watching the regatta sit Port Chalmers to-day. Ilv was leaning over a rail amidships watching the events, when he suddenly fell backwards anil died in a few minutes. Dr. Ha me was un board, and at unce rendered medical aid, but deceased never regained consciousness. It is understood that he lias relatives in Wellington. A pensioner named Andrew Mitchell, 07 years of age, died suddenly this morning at l'ort Chalmers, where'he has been earning his living for many years 'as a ii'sherman. Death is attributed to heart failure.
Feilding, Last. Xight. A man named Nomervillc was accidentally struck and instantaneously killed by an engine while he was lying close to the line p* Christmas Eve.'At the inquest a verdict of accidental death was returned.
