VOLUNTEER NOTES.
TAKAXAKI GUARDS. The Guards are putting in extra time in anticipation of the several fixtures in the near future. On Monday morning a team of sixteen competed for the Sargooil Cup, which was tired ill drill order and rapid-rate tiling—viz.: Ten rounds volley-firing in one minute, and ten rounds independent in one minute. Thetotal score did not reach expectations, mainly due for want of more careful preliminary practice and steadiness. A challenge from the Wanganui Kifles to tire a 20-inen teams match between the leading units ill the Taraiiaki Battalion and Wanganui Battalion respectively has been accepted, on similar terms to (lie match held last year. The Guards on that occasion beat the Wanganui Uilles by a respectable margin. The match will take place on 22nd or 23rd of next month, either at New Plymouth or Wanganui or on a neutral ground, Haw-era being suggested. Teams of the Guards are also practising items for the opening day of the Xew Plymouth Recreation Sports Crounds, and it is intended to enter a team to compete at tin' military tournament in connection | with the Napier carnival to be held ill March next.
A match for the Shield j and also trophy-shooting, will take place on the local range on Boxing Day, after which the team to compete ill the Wanganui match will be picked by the Shooting Committee.
