PARLIAMENT BUILDINGS' FIRE
KEGKET EXPRESSED ABItOAD. London, December 11. Much sympathy is expressed by English papers for New Zealand in the destruction of the Parliamentary buildings.
Sydney, December 12. The Daily Telegraph says the destruc-* tion of the Dominion Parliamentary buildings will.evoke general sympathy.
Per Press Association. lnvereargill, Last Night. With reference to the loss of the Parliamentary Buildings, the Prime Minister lias received the following telegram oi' sympathy from Mr. Thomas Bent, Premier of Victoria:—"Government and Parliament of Victoria desire to express their deep sympathy with the Ministers and Parliament of New Zealand in the irreparable national loss sustained by the people of the Dominion through tho destruction of the Parliamentary Buildings and their valuable treasures,"
i'he following cablegram was receiyed from the High Commissioner: —"All New Zealanders grieved to hear of the destruction of Parliament Buildings." The following message has been received by the i'rimc Minister through the (Governor from the Secretary of State for the Colonies: —''Have learned with great regret of the destruction of Parliament Buildings by fire. Glad to infer from press telegrams that no lives been lost, but deplore the loss of valuable records and property and the inconvenience which has been caused to the Dominion and its Legislature by this misfortune."
The Prime Minister has sent suitablo messages in reply.
Dunedin, Last Night. During yesterday and to-day the Prime Minister has been inundated with telegrams from all parts of New Zealand, and also from Australia and London, conveying sympathy in the loss sustained by the Dominion by the destruction of the Parliamentary Buildings. In addition to the messages received from Lord Elgin, the Hon. W. P. Reeves, and the Hon. T. Bent, the Hon. Mr. Wade, Premier of New South Wales, sent the following message:—"Government and people of New South Wales offer deepest sympathy with the Parliament and people of New Zealand tq the destruction of your Parliament iiuilungs, so rich in associations to the citizens of the Dominion."
The Prime Minister received the following message I'roiu Superintendent Hugo this evening: "Your kind telegram was read to members of the fire brigade and fire police at roll-call, and your recognition of their efforts at the late disastrous fire was much appreciated, while they deeply regret their efforts were not more successful."
