ELTHAM-OPUNAKE TRAMWAY SCHEME.
The report of Mr. F. Black, A.M.1.C.E., Wellington, on the Eltham road tramway, lighting, and power scheme, is a voluminous document, of which the following is a summary of the main estimates and recommendations:— ELTHAM-OPUNAKE TRAMAVAY PROPOSAL. A 2ft. Uin. raised track with no ramifications or side lines is recommended, with M rolling-stock of 1!) cars iand trailers, giving a speed of 15 miles per hour for passenger Service. The source of power recommended is producer gas, gas engine, and alternating-current generator, the generator station and converter station to be 12% miles apart and equi-distant from either end of the route. The capital expenditure is estimated at £119,070, the revenue at £18,835 per annum, and the expenditure, including capital charges, at £17,481, leaving a profit of £1354 for depreciation. ELTHAM-AUROA ROAD TRAMWAY ALTERNATIVE PROPOSAL. A producer gas station is recommended in preference to a hydraulic plant on the Kapuni. The direct current system of generating power, with no substation, is recommended, .Sixteen cars and trailers would be required. The capital expenditure is estimated at £-00,987, the revenue at £12,720, and the expenditure, including capital charges, at £IO,BIO, leaving available for depreciation a profit of £IOO4. EKiTJiAM LIGHTING AjND POWER PROPOSAL. it is recommended that tliis Scheme be kept separate from the tramway scheme. A direct current three-wire system, giving a supply at 220 volts pressure for lighting and small motors, and 440 volts for large motors, and having its station within the borough is recommended. The capital expenditure is estimated at £B2OO, the revenue at £2740, and -the expenditure, including capital charges, at £2242, leavin" a profit of £503. KAPONGA LIGHTING AND POWER PROPOSAL. This is recommended as a ramification of the tramway scheme, the necessary plant to be installed in the power station. The cost of equipment i» estimated at £l7lO, the revenue at £540 per annum, and the annual cost at £4BO, leaving a profit of £OO. OPUNAKE LIGHTING AND TOWER PROPOSAL. This is also recommended as a ramification of the tramway scheme, a substation being necessary. The' capital cost is estimated at £IO7O, the revenue at i.iio, and outgoings at £034, leaving a profit of £7O. TRAMWAY ROUTE; LIGHTING AND POWER PROPOSAL.
