licceivcd Dee. 8, 4.-12 p.m. J\'ew York, December 7. A mining disaster occurred yesterday at .Monongah, near Fairmount. The .scene of the catastrophe was the Baltimore Consolidated Coal Company's mine, where, through an explosion, two pits mutuarty connected and situated on opposite sidos of the West Forth Monongahela river, were set on (ire. Some hundreds of men were at work in the mine, and numbers of them were hurled through the ventilating shafts. I The actual loss of life is not yet known, but it k feared four hundred and twenty-five have perished. The fumes were so dense that search-

parties who entered the mine were uni able to penetrate any distance. Some bodies were discovered by the I explorers no mutilated as to be quite unrecognisable.

All the passages of the mines were blocked by the fall of debris, and it will lie a miracle if any of the entombed men are saved.

The force of the explosion was ho great that it shook all the houses within a radius of eight miles.
