CHAMBER OF COMMERCE.
The quarterly meeting of the Taraliaki Chamber of Commerce was held last evening. There were presentMessrs. C. W. Govett (president, in the chair), Newton King, Skcltou, Ab. Coldwater, C. 11. Burgess, 11. J3aily, James C. Morcy, T. C. Schnackenberg, D. K. Morison, S. \Y\ Shaw, Glasgow, \V. J. Penn, I{. C. Hughes, and F. \V. Brooking. Messrs. 11. 11. Davy (manager for Messrs. Macky, Logan, Caldwell and Co.) and A. E. Watkins were elected members.

Mr. Newton King said he luid been on the first deputation to which the iiun. .Mr, Mc.Nub promised to give the land. There was absolutely no doubt :of that promise. Another deputation had since gone to see the Minister for Kaihvayti about the matter, and had found out that -Air. Me~\ab should never have made the promise. lie did not think the chamber could help at all. The IJarbor Board could be depended upon to follow up the matter, as they had considerable interest at stake. Mr. Brooking said there was a simple way of connecting the new afreet without inconveniencing the .Railway Department to any great extent, lie suggested that a street could be taken from St. Aubyn-sti'cet along the side of Messrs. Wilson and .Nolan'* store, and thence through Mr. Mewlou King's yards to Cmri'j-slreet extension, Mr. King said that (hj» proposal was not altogether new. He had suggested taking the road through to the stream , as proposed by Mr. Brooking and thence at an angle to Kill-street. But the Borough Council would have nothing to do with that scheme. AN AmtEGIATION.
.Mr. Hughes said that they had hud lliu ijuestion of the curtailment of tile New Plymouth Harbor Hoard rating district prominently before the community recently, and the movement had been fought with very great earnerstncss by the Hon. 0. .Samuel, ,;:i;l his action would very likely hav ended successtully but lov bis seriou.- illness, the \\ a'lt ara people bad been very I'i'ady lo tender their thanks to the'gentlemen who piloted their Waitara Harbor Hill through the House, and it was only meet that this chamber should tender its thanks to tliu Hon. Mr. Samuel, who had been a real hero, at file expense of his health and danger to his own life. lie moved, "That this meeting, believing 111 al any cuiiailing ot the New Plymouth harbor district is prejudicial to the whole of Taranaki, to place on record its apprceia tioii of the services of the Hon. Oliver Samuel in endeavoring to prevent tills being authorised durinc Ihe hist session It further trusts that Hr. Samuel's health may lie speedily restored." Seconded by Mr. Brooking and carried.
