Per Press Association. Wellington, Lust Night. The ratepayers of JUiranur, at a poll taken to-day. endorsed by ISO votes to 11 Liu; proposals ol' the Borough Council | to borrow £71,000 l'or purposes of drainage, water-supply, and street im-

provement. The Director of the Wellington Technical .School states in his annual report that the school lias steadily progressed | and developed during the year. A number of new'classes have been established with satisfactory rennlts. There was an average attendance during the year of -108 (sic), constituting, the Director states, a record for the. Dominion. Dunedin, Lust Night. I A meeting of .the trustees of the Otago Benevolent Institution was held this afternoon to consider the opinion of the solicitor (Mr. J. A. Cook) on the validity of the election of six trustees which took place at this week's meeting of delegates from contributing bodies, and the validity of whicli has since been challenged. The solicitor's opinion was

to the effect that there was no express provision in the Act empowering local authorities to exercise votes by proxy, and that the late election was liable to lie declared invalid if proper proceedings were taken for that purpose. The trustees were recommended to lay the whole matter before the Minister, and, if considered necessary, a special regulation or order could be made by the Governor to meet the case. It was decided that the three members whose status is challenged—namely, Messrs. Talboys, Burnett, and the Mayorshould carry on the business of trustees until the matter had been referred to the Minister and settled by him. .Messrs. Talboyn, Burnett, and Loudon decided to place the matter before the Minister, and a letter was drafted for forwarding immediately. Gore, Last Niglit.

A poll was taken to-day by the Gore Borough Council on a proposal to faise a loan of £IO,OO0 —£0000 for a new Town Hall, £3OOO for water-supply extension, and £IOOO for electric light extension. All the proposals were defeated, the Town Ilall by '2lB to 76 votes, and the others by email majorities.

Auckland, Friday. An Apia correspondent writes: —"The volcano on Savaii continues to throw out enormous quantities of lava. It is highly probable that, a large area under the sea near hero is being thrust upwards. A trader who recently passed over this section of the sea bottom was astonished to note during the night-time that lightnings were apparently playing about on the ocean bottfmi some forty fathoms or so beneath his boat. Some of the sea which came into liis boat was so hot as to nearly scald his crew. Apparently the line of volcanic activity runs from west to east. It is not at all unlikely that a new, and perhaps very terrible, eruption will break out underneath the sea .at the point indicated.
