AN AMERICAN ROMANCE.
American society is in a fever 0 fcxcitement over the elopement of Hiss Helen Maloney, one of the richest heiresses in the United States, with a young Englishman named Samuel Clarkson The two were privately marked in New York on October Ist, and started for The bride is the daughter of Mr. Martin Maloney, of Ballangarry, Springlake, New Jersey, who invented the gasolene burner in the early seventies, and who has indirectly made a fortune in the Standard Oil Company. The lady met Mr. Clarkson while travelling in Europe last summer, and on her return to America entered into correspondence with him. Then came an invitation to visit the Haloneys at their princely home in New Jersey. This he promptly accepted, and for the past fewweeks the young couple have ben much together. On Tuesday, October Ist, Mr. Clarkson went with .Miss Maloney and her maid on a presumed shopping visit to New York. When the maid returned without the pair, the mother jumped to the conclusion that they had eloped. Her surmise proved correcT, for two days later she received a letter from her daughter, saying: "Sam and I are married. The ceremony was performed by a Cotliolie priest by dispensation. We both objected to pouip and ceremony, so we decided that it was best to marry without any fuss. We know you will forgive 11-." Mr. ilaloney was with President Roosevelt at the time, but Mrs. Maloney at once took train to Xew York, announced her daughter's elopement, and sought the aid of the press to discover her whereabouts. Mr. Maloney is a prominent Catholic, and his charities to the church are most generous. It is stated that Archbishop Farley gave the dispensation ; which preceded the marirage, which was -performed by a high Catholic dignitary jin Xew York. Both Mr. and Mrs. Ma inner declare that they have not . the slightest objection to a British son-in-law. and have despatched Marconigrams in the hope of picking up the Majestic, begging the couple to return and finish thcirhone ymoon at Ballangarry.
