a village romance, A strange assault case, arising out of jealousy, was heard by Mr. Justice (ir.uttluim at Cambridge Assizes. The accused was John Toiliday, an agricultural laliourer, who Ims reached the mature age of 74, ami the prosecutor was Thomas Wakeßehl, who is l(i years liis -onior. The parties live in the vilalge of Impington, and. according to (lie evidence, quarrelled over a female neighliour named Smith. The latter is 4(i yo.ir- old. When Smith's father was alive, V ikilield was a welcome guest at the *i;:j[h- fireside. The two old 1 lien were about the same age, and they loved 1 to talk over the "good old times." But after Mr. Smith's death his daughter, who had always been friendly with Toiliday. asked Wakefield to discontinue his v*it-. But he refused to do so, and, it was i!. when 'Miss Smitli began to lock her cottage door, the old mall started to call l'olliday nick-names. At last, according to the evidence, the latter lost his temper, ran after hi* tormenter, snatched his stick away, and beat lim so severely with it that he broke he elder man's arm and inflicted a numl>er of wounds. Wakefield, a sharp-eyed, alert little man. told the story of the assault with wonderful clearness. The accused, he i said. splashed away at him as if lit was knocking a bit of wood about." Tolliday was sentenced to three months' imprisonment.
