NOTED MAORI CHIEF DEAD.
Per Press Association. Auckland, Last Night. Wirihana Te Kapa Te Ao Te Rangi, the principal Maori chief of the Te Akau block, died at liawa on Saturday, aged 73 years. He was well known to the Maoris throughout the Dominion as one of their most noted chiefs, and it was mainly by his advice (that Mahuta agreed to take a seat in the Legislative Council. During the Waikato war Te, Ao Te Rangi threw in his lot with the pakeha, and on different occasions helped the Queen's soldiers. He was a genial old veteran, arid in his later years was a member of the Waikato Maori Land Council. A large tangi is being held at Kawa.
