We read of jockeys' incomes running into thousands, but 1 wonder how many really trouble about the Income Tax! A sporting paper has hit upon a competition that brings out a fair amount of skill, says the Times, and helps the gaiety of nations in these davs when the elusive winner takes so nnich finding. It is based on the book published in England, and called "Form in a nutshell." There is a temarlc in brackets against the horses named which signifies how they ran ,or any particular incident of the race which should be memorised. Each competitor selects a list of horses from "Roll's Guide." and ' apends his remarks, and some are decidedly amusing. Here arc a fows

' ~ ■'■"■'"| 15?T The consistent Te Aroha registered a double win and a second out of three starts at the Auekhn,] meeting. Sol, who unsuccessfully contested t' first run of the Manakau Hurdles did not start, in the re-run, nor did he face the barrier on the second or third days though accepted for in each race. His owner must have money to burn!

Swagsinnn paid a great dividend in the Maiden Hurdles. With Sol out of the way it looked a good thing for him —this is, of course, after the race.

Poor fields went to the post for the Hunt Club events at Ellershc, and Grey Dawn had two easy wins. Ruaparaha, who won a double at Auckland, is a five-year-old gelding from SeAon Delaval, and can move fairly fast over a mile.

Downfall put up a good performance when he won the City Handicap. ihe pace was on all tin; way, and after a struggle with Te Aroha, the game little son of San Francisco, drew away and won by a length in the good time of 2min lOsec.

General Koult was lucky to beat Chunleuse in the Musket Stakes. The son of Soult was slow to leave the barrier and was a good way behind the leaders when the straight was reached, but Chanteuse here ran wide, and Decley got General Soult up on the inside, to win, after a punishing finish, by a hare head.

One of the gamest battlers of the Turf went over when Nor'-west passed in his alley on Wednesday last. The old 'chaser had taken part in 109 steeples, and fairly revelled in the sport. It was great to see the old fellow flying the jumps and striding it out with his younger rivals. His tombstone should have engraved upon it: "Here lies Nor'-West, A baftlcr, in his prime One of the best, He had a dashed good" Fnuc."
