Stanford, S.M., a boy named Loughnan, of Palmerston North, wag charged with having turned off a. Weßfrmghouse brake tap, which might have obstructed the working of the railway. Mr. Hutton (Wanganui) appeared for the Department, and pressed for a heavy penalty. He pointed out the seriousness of this act, which might have resulted m a bad accident similar to fte* railway catastrophe on the Rotorua line His Worship said It seemed to him wonderfully stupid.on the part of the Department not ,to have these Westinahouse taps protected in some way Thev could easily be boxed in and made secure hy use of special keys, and for the protection of human life it was absolutely necessary that such precaution should be taken. but said he would inflict no penalty, as it was the fault of the Railway Departnient. He ordered the:2ad to pay costs amounting to £1 7s.
