DIVORCE ACT AMENDMENT.
ELIMINATING THE "SHOKT CUT." The Premier, in moving the second reading of the Divorce- and Matrimonial Causes Act Amendment Bill explained that the Bill repealed section eleven of the Act of 1004, which made it possible to obtain a divorce 011 the ground of desertion (by collusion in six months. Such cases had been so numerous, be said, that they' had become a public scandal, and this Bill was introduced to put a stop to such proceedings. ' " ' ' Mr in opposing the Bill, said that if the present means of obtaining diyprce 'were dane away with, then persons who sought divorces would" resort to immoral methods.
Mr liaume, in supporting Mr Barclay, said he had had many cases himself and in all his experience he knew of no case of collusion. '
The Premier, in replying, referred to Mr Justice Denniston's remarks made at New Plymoutlt on a recent application for divorce. He deprecated that Jnarriage could become a system of barter for seven months.

After midnight the House went into committee.
Mr Hornsby moved" an amendment, "That non-compliance with an order for restitution of conjugal rights shall not be deemed to constitute desertion until it has continued for twelve months."— Rejected by 42 to 4. Mr Latirensori moved an amendment to provide as a ground for divorce that a respondent is a lunatic and has been continuously confined as such for seven years in an asylum and in the opinion of two medical men and the medical superintendent of the asylum is unlikely to recover; provided that no divorce shall be granted if it appeare-di that the respondent's lunacy was attributable to the misconduct of the petitioner.
The amendment was agreed to by 33 votes to 11. Mr Wilford moved a new clause to provide that, where a respondent has been found guilty of tnking the life of child or children of respondeat or petitioner and sentenced to seven years' penal servitude, or upwards, this shall ]>e a ground for divorce'.—Agreed to 011 the voices. Tlie Bill with amendments was deported. . v
