A London cable states that Mr F. Dyer, of Wellington, has been gazetted Vice-consul for Greece. The widow of the late l)r Rawaou died at New Plymouth on Sunday at the age of j".'} year.-. Deceased, win) was a daughter of tlie late Rev. John Whitelc)', I was very well known in the province. Henry Redwood, the father of the Now Zealand turf, died at Blenheim on Saturday evening at the age of 8.) years. Archbishop Redwood, his brother, has gone from Wellington to take part in ihe obsequies. A telegram from (iisborne on Sunday night informed us that Mr. L. D. O'SulHvan. repre>enting the uovernment Lile Insurance Department, who is very well known in Taranaki, and from whom we published a reply U} the Chief Justice on child slavery in I'aranaki last week, has not l>een heard of since Monday last, when he was seen by the Government examining doctor, who intended going into the country with him. The police are making inquiries, but find nothing to .show what has become of him.
A very quiet wedding was solemnised on Saturday morning at the Tc llenui Church bv the Yen. Archdeacon Colo, the contracting parti"S being Mr Arthur Cowie, Seamen's Missioner to the port of Auckland, and youngest son of the late Primate of New Zealand, Bishop Cowie, and Mrs Leefe, eldest daughter of the late Charles Douglas Whiteombe, Esq., formerly Foreign Secretary of Tonga. Mr and Mrs Cowie were the recipients of many presents. Mr J. Whiteombe acted as liest man, and Mr F. N. Whitconil:. gave the bride away. The bride wore a summer tweed of light grey green, pretty hat of soft cream and pale blue straw, pale pink roses, Jong chiffon scarf, with delicate flowered pink. The following is ,-t translation of a copy of the diploma of Honorary Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.) recently awarded to Dr. Ernest Rutherford by the Cniver-.it v of liiessen, licrmany, on the occasion of their tercentenary.
(This is the fourth I'nivcrsny degree): "Under the command of his Most Serene Highness Ernest laidwig, of liesse, and on the Rhine,, and the most noljle Rector of the Ludwig University. We, the philosophical faculty of the University 'lave awarded on the occasion of the three hundredth anniversary of our University, to Ernest Rutherford, Professor of Physics, University of Manchester. for his exemplary investigations and his masterly presentation of radioactive phenomena, and his bold pronouncement and consequent marking out of thf theory of atomic disintegration, the honorary degree of Doctor of Philosophy, and have announced this conclusion through our Dean Professor, Walter Konig, at to-day's celebration. For evidence of which this diploma is forwarded with the great seal of the University attached and signed by the Rector and Deacon." Giessen, August 2nd, 1007. Professor Rutherford's friends in Taranaki should be proud of his continued successes.
