Per Press Association. Gisbornc, Sunday. At a meeting of the Hospital Trustees on Saturday the following appointments were made: Medical superintendent, Dr. W. Carlyle-Wilson; nursing sister, Miss Susan Macarthur (Tiuiaru); secretary, Mr. E. G. Matthews.
Invercargill, Sunday. About 2 o'clock oil Saturday morning the Orepuki Advocate ollice, with dwelling attached, was burnt, nothing being saved except a few of tlie day's papers. The proprietor, Mr. J. Fisher, is ia Wellington. The, premises and plant belonged to Mr. W. J. Lyon, and the building was insured in the Commercial Union ollice for £275 and the plant in the North British for £220.
Christchurch, Friday. Fifteen ilanchurian and Siberian ponies, which arc to be taken to the Antarctic with the South Pole expedition, arrived at Lyttelton this morning, and will lie quarantined at Quail Island until the expeditioirsstarts.
Christchurch, Last Night. During the nine days' carnival weelc period, from 2nd to 10th November, the amount of tramway fares collected totalled £4550 12s Gd, as against £4435 8s 9d for tlie same period last year. Auckland, Monday, The Supreme Court criminal cittings opened with thirty-seven prisoners involved in thirty cases. Mr. Denniston said on ■ the whole there was a substantial amount of crime represented in the charges, but there was no reason to assume that crime was on the increase in this district. There was no very serious charge except tlie ease of a Maori woman charged with murdering hor husband. It was gratifying to note that there were only two sexual eases, am! these were against Maoris. Commenting on the exploits of the hoy William .lames Crombie, he said there was nothing more likely to destroy the glamor of "Dead-eye Dick" heroes than a sound flogging in public. Ho regretted he could not order a whipping, and sent the boy to an industrial school for twelve months. Oilier sentences were — (leorge Ilorsecroft, (Thames), six months for forgery, and rfngh Wilson, aged 43, theft of money, admitted to probation.
