FEDERAL PROTECTION SCHEME
ENGLISH PRESS CRIUCi&H. London, November 5. The Tribune says Sir W. Lyne's uc v protection proposals form one of the most daring attempts on record to cnuvt State soculism. It U a peculiarly Australian combination of false paternalism and bad economies. The Daily News says the scheme is intended not so much to abolish sweating as to make protection attractive to the workers by giving it the appearance of an instrument for their industrial betterment behind the higher tariff wall. It will lie something like sharing the plunder—tlx- manufacturers taking lhe lion's share and the workmen what th •> organisation ran secure.
[The object of Sir W. Lyne's scheme appears to be to prevent the manufacturers using the high protective tariff as a means of oppression. The Board of trade he proposes to set up is to see that all Australian manufacturers are marked with the Commonwealth trademark, which is to indicate that the workers who have Wn engaged in the inamifacturr have l>een paid a proper living wage.)
