FARM AND DAIRY.
■«• One of the problems farmers are set to solve as a matter of the utmost importance to their prosperity is the strain of cow most useful lor, dairying. In this connection, says the Star, it is interesting to record the results obtained by Mr Arthur Dormer, of Mocurata, about four miles l'rjnu I'eilding, with ins well-known herd of Jerseys. Mr Dormer has been milking Jerseys for some thirty years, having started with stock obtained form Mr Stuckey, of Pangitumau, and added those strains most likely to improve the milking qualities of the cows. The result is that ilr Dormer posesses one of the linest little milking herds in the colony, wheter judged by the quality and yield of milk oi their tractableness in handling. For the twelve months ending July ] a at the proceeds of the milk from 27 cows, including six first-class heifers, reached £lO7 os od, or an average of £ls Is 8d per cow. The highest cheque was received in November ( £-13) and the lowest in July (.1:24 3s lid).
A case was recently reported in which a hen that had died at Whitfield (Victoria), on being dissected, was found to contain six pea rifle cartridges, a screw half an inch long, and a piece of copper wire. Mr Hawkins, Government poultry expert, pointed out that the hen swallowed these articles because it could not. get grit, without which poultry could not exist for any length of time, ■the fowl s craving for sharp substances jlrove it to pick up nails, tin, pins, etc. Thousand, of farmers, he added, no fleeted to s „p p ,y their ])ou]t ivjl)] ,-iit. liens required not onlv food but Btarpp.cc, sof grit, and pkV y of oyst , lis and burnt hones, the latler at (he rate of 71b per bird per annum, in mshell " iS!I the ° ggS WiUl a stro "S
