CORONERS' INQUESTS.
PAYMENT OF WITNESSES. Per Press Association. Auckland, Last Night. Tlie question of the payment of a witness giving evidence at ail inquest was again mentioned to-day at the inquest concerning the victim of the tram latality in I'onsonby-road. A married man, who had lost some time and consequently wages in attending to give evidence in the case, asked the Coroner, Mr. Uresham, if he could claim his expenses. The Coroner replied: "There arc no expenses allowed for witnesses, it is a shameful thing, and it should not be." The witness then remarked: "it will make a man feel like Lord Aelson, turning a blind eye when he sees an accident." The witness added -that he had lost 15s in attending the inquiry. The Coroner said there was no help for it. Mr. Lundon, solicitor, also expressed his views on the subject. ''lf they would only elect members to Parliament who would consider these sorts of things," he said, "instead of blithering about other matters of no interest to the community, there would be some sense in it and some good done." Several of the witnesses attending the inquiry have been present a couple of days.
