A Wairon (Auckland) paper learns ithat an English syndicate has been formed to test the possibilities of extracting oil from the earth of the swamps whence kauri gum is dug. Two years ago an experiment was made of heating the earth in a large closed vessel—an old boiler—and a good percentage of thick oil was obtained, and also an illuminating gas. A disgraceful scene was witnessed in the yard adjoining the butcher's shop at, Taylovville on Wednesday evening, when a father and his two strapping sons had a determined sct-t"o\ The old man was
unable to withstand the onslaught of the sons, and was consequently considerably knocked about. The fight was witnessed by a large number of spectators.—Wangiumi Chronicle. Dr. Mason, Chief Health Officer, who returned to Wellington on Wednesday evening from a visit to the North, investigated, with Dr. Purdy, Health Officer at Auckland, the circumstances concerning the outbreak of typhoid at Hamilton. Dr. Mason informed a "Dominion" representative that the cause of the epidemic, which has now diminished,
was definitely traced to impure milk supplied by a single dairyman. The two health officers met the local authorities and conferred with them on the question of preparing by-laws in connection with the milk-supply. The international postage stamp, which was adopted at the Home Postal Congress last year, on the suggestion of Air Henuiker Heaton, M.P., came into use on October 10. It is an artistic picture of a goddess, with a background of olive branches, was 'designed by Grassett, and has been printed at Kinsiedeln, in Switzerland. Its value is 2>/ 2 d, and it will be sold in every country in the Postal Union, so that a correspondent may prepay a reply from any of these countries.
