LADY PLUNKET AND VOLUNTEERING.

Per Press Association. Ohristchurch, Last Night. The visit of Her Excellency Lady 1 l'lunket, honorary colonel of the 2nd North Canterbury Mounted Regiment, to the regiment's headquarters at Culverden is likely to result in much general good to the mounted volunteers by increasing the interest in the corps. That Lady Plunket is no ornamental officer is shown by the keen interest she takes in the general work of the force, which is marked by her latest action in presenting a handsome shield for competition among the mounted volunteers of the Dominion. As Her Excellency is 1 honorary colonel of a Canterbury regiment, she has asked that the first com- • petition for the shield be held on a Can- ■ terbiiry ground, the locality of further ! competitions to be settled later. It is ' suggested that the competition take ' place about March or April. The conl ditions of the contest will be framed ' by Colonel Davies, Inspector-General, ' and it is safe to say they will be of a s service nature. As Her Excellency will i be present at the competition, it is ext pected a large entry will ensue.
