BREAKWATER EXTENSION.
SECUIUiS'U SIWE SUPPLIES. Trial drives are still being made With a view of securing a supply of stone for the eoutiiiuaiijii of Uie breakwater extension at the harbor. The work has been somewhat interfered with by the weather, j\fr I<', hemlei'son, uie Harbor Board's foreman, yesterday reported that at tlie Joshing Rock ' the distance now driven was 54 feet, and the stone showed a further improvement since last month's report. Another 25 or 27 feet would camplete this drive At Paritutu the drive was in 33 feet, but as there were no prospects of getting suitable stone in that part of the hill, he had stopped the work. A .close examination of tlie western face was equally discouraging, as the stone was quite soft and chalky, besides being almost inaccessible. On the • northern lace, fronting the Horse Shoe Bend, a prominent outcrop had been tested by means of a few sand-shots, y,nd a quantity of about 100 tons brought down. Although the fall was fully 150 feet about 50 per cent of this was useful stone, one block being about 6 tons in weight, and two about 5 tons each. The stone was hard, and the face looked as if much larger stone could be obtained by systematic working. . A trial drive at the level of the ledge above the Hoise-Shoo Bend, would prove whether the stone continued down to that level. No better stone could he Obtained in Paritutu. Mr Henderson concluded by stating that the stone could he handled from tins point almost as cheaply as from the present quarries. The distance to be driven would be about sixty feet The chairman said the report was most satisfactory. The matter of making Ihe test above the Bend could be left until tlie stone was needed The foreman submitted a ' lengthy communication from Mr Marchant, engineer, gjvmp- instruction as to proced- ™ ™ a T f npf at tl,e Rock quan y He recommended the foreman to work out the present quarry for concrete block purposes.
