Everybody living within miles of the Block lias been anxiously looking forward to this competition, but the clerk of the weather took little notice of this anxiety; on tile contrary, he seemed determined to do all in his power to hinder tlie business. JSTot only lias the weather been unpleasant, but influenza has rendered many hors de combat who, if well would have enjoyed the festivities of the ball. Following is a list of the fancv dresses and their wearers. I, bein<* only a man, cannot describe thorn. Suffice it to say that - the whole affair relfeets credit ou the people who took so much pains and showed such artistic taste in their work. I may mention that tlie hall was well filled, that visitors from great distances were present, and that the committee are to be congratulated on the very able way in which the ball was conducted. . I must not forget to say that the prizes offered to the ladies by Mr. Deare, of Sew Plymouth, and by the committee to the gentlemen, were won by Hiss Pole and Mr. Jlarold Street respectively, hi fancy dress Cherry Ripe, Miss 10. Street; Porto Rico Girl, -Miss I. Street; Folly, Miss M. Andrews; Spanish Dancer, Miss D. Iloby: Nurse, Mrs. C. Street; Powder and Patches, Miss Rice; Waiting-maid, Miss li. Iloby; I'orgct-me-iiot, Miss IT. Thorno; Japanese Lady, Miss Thome; Russian Peasant, Miss M. Thome; Spanish Dancer, Miss A. Thorne; Bohemian Girl, Miss WhiteGipsy, Miss Steel; Dutch Girl, Mrs. W. King; An Arabian Prince, Mr. C. Street; Clown, Mr. R. Iloby; Clown, Mr. L. Clare; Black and White, Mr. W. Hoskin; A Fireman, Mr. C. Hoby; Harlequin, Mr. H. Street; Tennis, Mr. G. Old; Red Indian, Mr. W. King; The Road to Ruin, Mr. W. Andrews; Cavalier, Mr. TT._ Jordan; Soldier, Ifr. Evans; Old China, Mr. N. Rundlo. The following wore ''advertisement" dress: Deare',3 Boot Arcade, Miss I. Sal way; Corn Cure, Miss L. Salway: Morey and Moore, Miss M, Salway; K Jam, Miss Pot"; Sole, Butcher, Miss L. Holmes. According to ihe voting, Miss E. Street took second place among the ladies, and Mr. W. King second among the gentlemen.
