PREFERENCE TO UNIONISTS.
Per Press Association. Wellington, Last Night. The Harbor Board held a special meeting to-day to discuss the matter of giving preference to members of the Wharf Laborers' Union. The Board went into committee, and on resuming it was reported that the committee arrived at the following recommendation:—"That it is unnecessary to express an opinion on the subject of preference to unionists, and that the question be left to the Arbitration Court to decide." The chairman having moved to confirm this, the Hon. T. W. Hislop moved an amendment that the Board is prepared to agree to preference to unionists upon condition that a satisfactory agreement be come to with regard to the admission and continuance of membership of the union and with regard to other matters affecting th.o relations of the Board with casual employees. After considerable discussion the amendment was negatived and the motion carried.
