THE HOLIDAY QUESTION.

Per Press Association. Dunedin, Last Night. A number of prominent citizens interviewed by a Times reporter to-day expressed themselves in favor of publio holidays being held on the Monday following that to be celebrated. Mr. R. Chisholm, president of the retailers' branch of the Employers' Association, warmly supported the idea, and also believed that the bunching of all holidays, except Christmas and New Year's Day and Easter, into, say, a fortnight's holiday, to be held about Christmas, would be desirable. He thought that this would come in time. Residents are uncertain as to whether the movement is intended to benefit employers or employees. It is pointed out that Monday holidays will enable many employees to occasionally, get away from midday on Saturday till Tuesday morning. Others remark that little or no business is done on Monday, and it is practically immaterial to the employers whether their employees are there or not. Mr. Breen, secretary of the Trades and Labor Council, expressed himself as being opposed to both suggestions, though he thought the question | must be carefully regarded from many I points of view.
