Per Press Association. . Wellington, Wednesday. Ihe ease in which a young unmarried woman sued for the recovery of her illegitimate child from its father was decided by Dr. McArthur to-day. The child had been maintained by the father for a number of years in a Home. Some time ago the father of the child married another woman, who bore him a child, which died. Armed with a removal warrant, the wife went to the Home and took away her husband's illegitimate child. The mother sued for the recovery of the child. The Magistrate held that the mother should have the custody, and he ordered the father to pay 7s per week towards the maintenance of the child.

Taihape, Wednesday, William Heappy, convicted of sly grogselling at Utiku, was sentenced to one month's imprisonment. A large quantity of liquor was found on liis premises, Auckland, Wednesday. The Nautical Court wliich inquired into the collision between the steamer Clansman and the scow Herald found that the captain of the scow was in fault in not showing a light astern, though he saw the Clansman overtaking his vessel. The Court orders the captain of the scow to pay the costs of the inquiry. The Bench remarked upon the apparent ignorance of some captains regarding collision regulations. There was much laxity, especially in regard to showing lights astern. Greyniouth, Wednesday. Five business places were burned down at Brumier this morning, including Ward, stationer; Walker, grocer; Williams, butcher; Flaherty, bootmaker, and an empty shop. The fire started in the latter. J. Taylor, the owner, had no insurance.

Pahiatua, Wednesday. The roads in several parts of the district are blocked by slips. A large ona occurred on the Makuri road, and communication is interrupted..
