McCullough, linsmitih in the aldington railway workshops, has been isniiss'. d from the Railway Department ftir twenty-five years' service as the esult of his refusal to give an underaking ii jt to take part in political afV.irs in future. Chrisitcluirch, Last Night. .Mr. J. A. McCullougli informed a reiorier to-day that he had received no notification himself that the Government had decided to dismiss him, and lie was much surprised that the fact of his dismissal should have been telegraphed from Wellington and published before he had been advised of the intentions of the Government. Pending the receipt of the official communication, however, hij declined to make any statement on the subject of his suspension and dismissal. AN ILL WIND, ETC. Per Press Association. Dunedin, Last Night. The Slaughtermen's Union has decided by a unanimous vote to nominate Mr. McCullougli as workers' representative on the Arbitration Court.

ACTION OF GOVERNMENT APPROVED. Per Press Association. Auckland, Last Night. At a meeting of the Liberal and Labor Federation to-night a long discussion took place in reference to the McCullougli case, and a motion was carried approving of the position taken up by the Government. The opinion was expressed that while regulations existed governing the conduct of officials employed in the Civil Service, the Government had no alternative but to insist that such regulations shall be rigorously carried out, and it was also held that such regulations were absolutely essential to the effective discharge of the duties of those engaged in the service. Mr. W. O'Keefe, as a railway servant, stated that the general opinion of railway servants throughout the Dominion was that McCullough had gone too far. Still, while they thought this, railway servants felt they should be given greater liberty to exprcsß tlieir political opinions. They did not agree with the views of the Political Labor League, whom he classed "as friends of the gentlemen down below."
