Mr B. Woodhouse was a p.isscngc.r by the Kotoiti for the North last nigue on a business trip. The Governor lias appointed Messrs. S. P. Smith and 1!. Dingle members of the Egmont National Park Board. Mr. C. P. Owen, Baptist missionary in the Catlins district, has joined the staff of the Balclutha Free Press. Mr E. P. A. Platford, who was for many years accountant for Wilson and Cotterill, solicitors, and latterly in business as a land agent and sharebroker, and who was secretary to the School Commissioners and various trusts, died at Napier yesterday after a lingering illness. lie was a member of the Bluff Hill Bowling Club and a prominent bowler.—Press wire.
A well-known elicss-jrluyor, Mr. Frank Hollins, of Huirangi, Taranaki, was married in the terrace Congregational Church on Saturday last (says the New Zealand Times). Mr. Hollins, who was champion of Birmingham before he left England some five years ago, is eon-1 sidered by many followers of the game to be the best "player in New Zealand. It is expected that he will be a competitor at the next championship congress to be held in Wellington next Easter.- For several years Mr. Hollins has acted as judge in the competitions for the brilliancy prizes presented by Mr. Justice Dcmiiston, the president oT the New Zealand Chess Association.
