PROVINCIAL NEWS.

RAIIOTL". | The.return ball given by {he ladies (married and single I of Kalinin on Wednesday evening proved another instance of the saying that if anything is taken in hand bv the holies its success is ensured. The weather, which had been very bad for .some time past, was fortunately line, and consequently (here was a very large ntlondan.e. over 71) couple, being present from all parts of the distn'et. The hall was tastefully decorated, the walls being draped with flags and curtains interspersed with greenery; whilst overhead flags and Chinese lanterns completed a fairy-like effect, which was greatly enhanced by the lovely dresses worn by the ladies and the more sombre garb of their partners. The floor was in perfect order, and the music was provided by Messrs Knowles (piano), Duncan (violin), Fischer (cornet), which is equivalent to saying that it was first-class. An excellent supper was tastefully laid out in the supperroom and done full justice to. Mesdames Lowrie, Campbell. Mcllnnignn, and .Misses Dempsey and Flanagan, who were looking alter the tables, had their work cut out attending to the wants of their guests. During supper numerous ••extra extras'' were played by Airs Sefton. Miss Morgan, anTl .Messrs Svmons and Willcx. Alessrs W. .Morrow and J. Rothery acted as Al.C.'s in their usual colli'!"ons manner." Dancing was carried on till I a.m.. when the gatlrrjig reluctantly dispersed, all prc-eut being tired but happy. The ladies of Rahotu can congratulate themsehes on the success oi the function, no small measure of which success is due to the secretaries (.Mrs Lowrie and Aliss Dempsey), who were most assiduous and indefatigable in carrying out their many duties. Thursday—Mr Newton King's sale day—turned out a very wet day. and consequently there was a small yarding of rattle.

Rahotu looked very busy on sale day, despite the rain, no less than two motor cars arriving from Xew Plymouth. Mr Aitken, who recently pureliased Mr Tvrell's farm, has arrived here. Air John Doody lias sold out his farm at the Tinoka road to Messrs Taylor Bros. It is understood that Mr Doody intends taking a holiday trip to California before settling down again.
