: STRIKES IX ENGLAND. London, October 3. Owing to the attempt? of the strikers from Clark and Co.'s works to intimidate the Fergnslie workers, Messrs Coats have closed the Ferguslie mills until protection is available. All hands will be paid in the interim. Twelve thousand workers are idle. The Board of Trade returns show that there were more industrial disputes, involving the loss of more working days in 190(1, when the boom set in, than in any of the preceding five years. Yet only 17 per cent of the workers involved in the strikes obtained increases in wages. LYNCH LAW IX PARIS. Paris, October 3. Hooligans having established a condition of terrorism in Paris, the citizens have organised a force armed with revolvers, truncheons, handcuffs and dark lanterns for the purpose of lynching the hooligan gangs. THE COAL VEND DEFENDED.
I Sydney, October 3. A gentleman prominently connected with the coal industr-y, in a letter to the Press, characterises the statements made regarding the Coal Vend as reekless and without foundation. IPe declares that for the last ten years the proprietors have been pr.iticaliy gr.ing their coal away, for the prices in most cases involved a loss. So far from acting in any tyrannical way in raising the prices now, they were only taking a step which was just to themselves and ( would admit of trading operations Showing a moderate return. He claims that the proprietors have a perfect right to appoint their own shipping agents for the handling of coal.
ATTEMPTED STREET MURDER. Melbourne, October 4. Mr Jones, General Superintendent of Railway Transportation, was shot while walking in Collins street. His condition is serious. An exporter named Thomas has been arrested on a charge of attempting to murder Mr Jones. FEDERAL MAIL CONTRACT. Melbourne, October 4. Several tenders have been received ior the new mail contract. It is understood that the tenderers include the Orient Coy., ir James Laing and ons, and the Australian Shipping Combination. . GOLF. Melbourne, October 4. Miss Wray, of Xew South Wales, won the Ladies' Golf Championship of Australia with 208 strokes. Miss Parbury was runner-up with 280 strokes. LORD BRAMPTON ILL.^ London, October 3. A Coiniui=»ion oi Imjuiry into the methods of the Genoa Courts dealt with a series of charges of shady practices against the Judges. The result is that eight of the Judges are being relieved of their functions. They will be prosecuted in the liigu Court. (A noted lawyer recently created a sensation in au Italian Court by charging one of the Judges with bribery and corruption. Ue rciused to go on witn the case while thU Judge was sitting.
