ihe chairman moved the adoption of II"' report and balance-sheet. He said they had had a most successful vcar, having made 0.3 tons more butter thin t.ie previous year without any increase o! start'. The factor,- was capable of l uruing out another lfi!) t„n s n , t „.;,], o'lt elding to either stall' or 'plant, I here had been a saving of ,U2S in the power account as 'the result of the infiliation of the electric im.lur. The coming .season's output had been sold a"" a puce which should en.,ure a payment oi i(l'/,d per pound of butter. The butter had been sold to a grocer, which was alioiil as close as they could hope to get to the actual consumer. The directors had lotinil that the old scales were losing money to the shareholders by ,-iving overweight, so new ones had' Wen procured at a cost of .C,i;i Ss (id. That seemed a lot of money, but the acui-i-acy of the neighing was quickie repaying the expense. The cost of" production had been cheaper than in anv previous year, due in pari to the increased output and to the cheaper power. The dispute with the Employees' Association had been settled. ile ! thought the increased wages would briii" ! them a better class of men to work in I factories. The workers would all start otr scratch, and would have better hours. 'There was no denying that dairy factory employees had to work very long ' hours, and on seven days a week.* ° j
In answer to .Mr Bri'dgman, the chairman said the Dudley road engine repairs had cost .€lO. And it should have been attended to long before. There would be a great saving of firewood.
Mr Heiiihy wanted to know vhv the new scales had been procured. " The chairman had said the company was losing by the scales. Why did he allow two months to go before the scales were obtained?
The chairman said Jlr llerlihy wanted some H 5 scales, and the directors made the amount .UO. AH the scales at that figure had the objection that they rusted. The Taieri and Peninsula Co. had obtained rust-proof scales, but .t',')2 was the cost of them. He came back to the directors and asked authority to purchase the Kiddell scales. He got them. Had he expended money without his colleagues' authority where would he have liecn?
The secretary read figures to show that luul they had the new scales the whole year the season's loss would have been only £7 3s, or the company would have saved ,C2o 4s.
Mr Heiiihy complained that the old scales were rusty, and had never been cleaned. The Riddcll scales were "chucked to one side" at the Freezing Works, and the £4 15s Fairbanks scales were in use.
The chairman said there was a great difference between the factory and freezing works There was no salt and water (lying about 'here.
Jlr Herlihy: it's a case of keeping the scales clean.
The chairman: Will you keep quiet? I didn't interrupt vou. Xearlv nil the best, factories used the liiddcll scales. .Mr .l.ill. tli.- "Tnranaki butter king."' li-i-d tin-in. ;-.nd said hi- could net his li.ix.-s weighed to within half-a'n-ouncc. with tli.- old scales they couldn't get to within lulf a pound. The ehiirmau .-aid the factory had ciilv one set of scales since it started. Mr llei-lihy said the new scales took twenty minutes to adjust. Mr I'orn-y. tin- manager, .-aid the new ■■e.ilc-. were as quick as any.
Questioned as to tin- iin-,w-"l account, ih- secretary showed that the main faei ay's fail and electricity had been less ". li lis. in tli previous year, although 35 ions more 1 niter had been made. I'h- -ccretary stated that the annual cost of manufacture, f.o.b, was 5s 7d per box.
A shareholder asked how it was that ilia horriMccd item had been cheaper than in the past year, de-j.ite the increased price of oat's and chad'. Tiie chairman ..aild not explain.
.Mr. t'odd said one reason was that the Dudley-road horses bad been running on the road.
Mr. llerlihy »aid the saving was duo to better Mipervir-ion. lie bad had a 1:1 in to keep his eye oil all'airs at Tariki and Ratapiko. and no doubt that liarl had it* elled on the other creameries. .Mr. Mackie <aid this horse-feed seemed to be a particularly burning question. His own experience was that more horse* lord had be. n used than in the previous year at Kainiata; so the saving must haw been duo to the lower price of J odder.—Adopted. TiJi: DIUIXTOiiATE. He considered such a course of action would he anything but co-operation. Settlers had put money into the Moa Company, had supplied the Tariki creamery ever .since it opened, and were ready to go on supplying. Were they to be ruined on account of tin* "black sheep"? lie would rather pay his share of any loss than take sueli a step. On the motion of Mr. l.rMgeman and half-a-dozen seconders, it was decided to keep the creamery running for another year, and that accounts be kept to fliow its success or otherwise.
