RAILWAY SOCIAL CLUB.

The final social of tile season airangcd by the itailway Social Club was held in the Drill Halt last night, and was favored with the biggest attendance of the series. This effort was in aid of the Recreation Sports Ground. A euchre tournament took up the first two hours, over 150 taking part. Ties were recorded in both the ladies' and gentlemen's competitions, the ladies with 13 games and gentlemen 15. In the playoff games Miss A- Wells ibeat Mrß J. Roberts, thus securing two handsome vases, and Mr S. George beat Mr Kennedy, winning a fine umbrella. The prizes were presented by the Mayoress, Mrs Dockril). His Worship, on behalf of the club, thanked the public for their patronage of the socials, and explained their #bject. The funds made were devoted to the purchase of books for the Railway Social Club's library, and those books were chosen with a view of improving the men in the service. Having netted a fair amount for that purpose, the management decided to give parties in aid of the Western Park and Recreation Sports Ground. The former had realised ;C0 nett, and this one should do even better. He had also on behalf of the club to thank the ladies' committee, Mesdames Gardiner, Ford, Trccby, I-los-kin, Adams and Hodge, and the Press, for assistance. The club intended to put on a series of entertainments next year, which he hoped would be similarly successful.

Sir A. L. Humphries, chairman of the Sports Ground Committee, tendered his thanks to the promoters, .whose efforts he could assure them were much appreciated. Dancing was indulged in, about sixty couples taking the floor. Mrs George and Mr G. Blunder supplied the music. An excellent supper was provided, and promptly served by the ladies' committee.
