TARANAKI PROVINCIAL RETAILERS' ASSOCIATION

A meeting of the above Association was held in Jiawera on Thursday afternoon. Delegates were present representing Hawera, liltham, ivaponga and Inglewood. Among other business transacted it was resolved to recommend the various towns in Taranaki to add the Prince of Walss' Birtliday to the list of whole holidays observed throughout t'ly province. This was recommended with a view to obiai ing unilorjuity, instead of ; ome of the towns observing Umpire Day and some Prince of Wales' Birthday as hid been done in ihe past. It was also resolved to recommend to the Government that not more than eight statutory holidays should be observed in each year. The Association decided to recommend its branches to observe Monday, 11th November, as the King's Birthday this year, instead of Saturday, !)th. The Government will be asked by the Association to amend the Banking Act in the direction of abolishing "Saints' Days" from the list of bank holidays owing to the great inconvenience caused to the general public by the observance of these.

With a view to obtaining the same half-holiday throughout the province it was resolved that delegates from Hawera, Ingelwood, Ellham, Sratford and Manaia should wait upon the Hawera auctioneers at an early date to try and arrange for the stock sales in Hawera being held on days that would allow Hawera to observe the same half-holi-day as the other towns on the railway line.

A resolution was pissed taxing exception to clause 4 in the proposed Fire Brigades Act Amendment Bill, restricting the operations of the Aef in boroughs having a populations of flouo inhabitants or over, and expressing tile opinion that clause 30 in the original Act should remain law. It was also decided to urge that the Act should be amended so as to give boroughs or town districts the right to take a poll at any time as to whether they should be declared a lire district under tile Act. it was resolved to forward, a copv of this resolution to Messrs Poland. Nvmes and Major, M.'sH/R., and to ask their cooperation in the imttcr.—Star.
