THE MAN WITHOUT A CHANCE.

Let the loafer whine of his days of sin, And the chance lie's flung away; And the thousands once that he stood to win When the swing of his life was gay. The chances are that lie never stood On the edge of a decent crime; Nor not a fever to stir his blood To the pulse of a reckless rhyme. I'll sing you a song with a cheerier lilt, And never a backward glance, Of a man who is "into it" up to the hilt, ' Who never has cried o'er the milk he's spilt, Tho' he never has had a chance.

Ho is not too hard to find, thank God. He is always knocking about; In the city you'll meet with his cheery nod, Or back of the Farthest Out. And little re recks of the times gone by. Or the crop of liis early fruits, With a hammer to swing, or a drill to turn, He'll lead you a merry dance; He has many a lesson .of life to learn; There- arc things lie docs that he ought to spurn— But he never has had a chance.

He will Btand the drinks for the boasting wreck Who lias suffered a "fearful smash," And if trouble comes he is right on deck With his tongue, or flat, or cash. He has never had any luck himself, Though he's worried it through alright, But he mostly hangs to a bit of pelf, For a cobbler whose pockets are light. llo's an awful dunce—but he never stood In the light of the world's advance; He has always done what a white man could— ' Tho' he knows it not—for his country's good. Yet he never has had a chance! —T.H.W., in til" Sun. "
