LOCAL AND GENERAL.

The Ifidhurst Butter Factory is at present turning out about fifty boxes of butter daily, being seven boxes more than were turned out during the same time of last year. The multiple switchboard that lias been installed at the New Plymouth Telephone Exchange is working satisfactorily, being a decided improvement upon the old system. A start has been made with the work of erecting the new station at Sentry Hill. It is being placed about half a mile farther towards Lepperton. People near the present station do not like the contemplated change of location, and over a hundred settlers liave signed a petition protesting against the change. It i$ understood that Lepperton will require to use the new station. At nine minutes to six yesterday evening, Jlr Justice Dcnniston re-opc,i-ed the Supreme Court to take an defended divorce action. "You'll liav.j to hurry up," lie faid to counsel. Mil Spence, of Stratford, ln.rricd to some# purpose, produced the petition and the petitioner, and drew from the latter the story of his wife's infidelity. Tho decree was granted just as the clock ehiineJ the hour. This is a striking incident of the simplicity of divorce proceedings, but it isn't always so easv, His Honor rennrked on Tuesday Viat lie didn't inind sandwiching in unde-. i fended divorce cases at almost any stage of the sessions. The gentlemen who comprised the Grand Jury at the Supreme Court oil; Mondiv, or some of them, were not atl all satisfied with the evidence given by the principal witneses for the prosecution in the Opnnakc tarring and feithering incident- It is now currently stated that the prosecutor himself wis unable to swear positively that the eight men charged were present and took part in the assault, and that bis evidence contradicted itself. Similarly another witness picked out ( man for absolute identification. T:>e same witness, though not supposed to have seen the whole of the a«sniilt, wa« now quite forgetful of the circumstances. A third witness said there i might have been seventy pw,.„t for nil he knew. In the other event, no great harm is done Another rcquest-and this one was preferred on Tuesday—that counsel from [ a distance is engaged, and is unable to be present. For this reason the Court is asked to set down his case to suit the time of his arrival. Mr WnVht told His Honor on Tuesday that Mr. M.U'r.-,, of Wellington, would appear in a civil action, and be couldn't possibly arrive until that night. "Of course, he can't," retorted Ilis Honor, "for I suppose he only got aboard the train today." Then he ftsked why Mr Myers was so late in coming. The Court had

been sitting two days. Mr Wright answered that Mr Myers had been "engaged elsewhere." This didn't smooth matters in the slightest. In fact, it immediately had the opposite effect. '•Do you really think that I will take the suggestion," the Judge asked, "that I should sit waiting, keep the business of the country waiting, itnd the Court waiting, merely because Mr Myers is engaged elsewhere? It is ridiculous to suppose that eounsel at a distance can say they won't be here till a certain time. I am not going to adjourn over a day if I'm ready to go on. In Chambers yesterday Judge Denniston, upon the motion of Mr. Hoy, granted probate of the will of the late Albert Arthur i'ikett to Edith Mary I'ikctt arid ■lolin Watson Andrews, the executors named in the will. Perhaps oil tho principle adopted by the novice traveller in smothering his trunks and boxes with labels and tags, legal gentlemen appear in court in faded gowns and oily-looking wigs, denoting, of course, frequent donning and much business. At a meeting of motoring enthusiasts held yesterday it was resolved'to form an automobile club, to be called the I'aranfiki Automobile Association. The following officers were elected:—President, Mr. Walter Bewley; committee, .Messrs. C'ruicksliank, Mills, Gunson, N. Bewley, and Heard; secretary, Mr. L. M. Monteath. It was decided to secure clubrooms and a garage, and to hold the inaugural run this (Thursday) afternoon, when all motorists are invited to meet at the Post Office for a run to Inglewood, where the Stratford motorists will be met.
