DOMINION CHAMPIONS!!

AUCKLAND BU'SIIINOLY RECOUNTS I-IKK FAMU. Per Press Association. Auckland, Saturday Night. Auckland, judging liy the trophies that have been secured by various representatives, lias during the past season attained an enviable prominence in athletic pursuits (says the Herald). The Auckland Rugby representatives in 1905 secured the Ranfurly Shield, and have held it against all comers since. In Association football, which has made such great strides in Auckland, our representatives have also proved themselve:the .premiers, for they secured the Brown Shield. In hockey, too, the Aucklandcrs have won more representative games than the players of any other province, and are thus entitled to be the initial holders of the New Zealand Hockey Association's Provincial Shield. Our cricket representatives were admitted by the JI.C.U. team which last season toured New Zealand to be the best they had met ill the Dominion, and Auckland only lost possession of the Plmiket Shield by a very few votes when the Cricket Council balloted for the initial holders. It was generally admitted in the South that

Auckland hud the lie/t claim to the •Shield. It will he :xen the record is l'itlhi'l 1 ,'i unique one. Di:i'mg the Rugby football sonson just ended the Auckland Union sent a team South to l'nvcrcargill, playing eight matches, winning three, losing four, and drawing on<;; the scoring being 47 points for and 46 against. Auckland also "played four iuterprovinciiil games on the home ground, winning all, and scoring 51 points against 10 points. Seventeen tries were scored by Auckland, but not one was converted. Auckland also won the four inter-union matches played during the season, scoring 81 points against 10 points. The Auckland B team also played five matches, three being won, one lost, and one drawn, scoring 77 , points for and 30 against. The Auck- [ land junior representatives also played | and won five games, one being against \ 'faranaki. They scored 83 points, and had only 0 registered against them. The City District Football Club ivon the , Jloss Davis silver football trophy for ' the season, for they scored most points ! in all grades. The hockey representatives played five games during the sea-; ( son, winning all and scoring 25 goals to , 7 against. ' It has been decided that the party of twenty-six bowlers from Auckland shall , visit New South Wales next January at | the conclusion of the Northern tourna- > ment. The party will be limited to twenty-six players, and will travel under ' the auspices of the Auckland Provincial Association. It is probable that a New Zealand team of bowlers representative of the whole Dominion will visit Australia towards the end of 1!)08, and play a series of representative games. At the first annual meeting of the iNortli Shore Sports Protection Society the chaifman stated that the objects of the society were to foster sport in every legitimate way and to conserve its interests in whatever manner may from time to time be deemed necessary. He also intimated that the sporting clubs at Wellington, Hawkes Bay, and Christchurch had affiliated with the North Shore society. The society's rules, of which there are seventeen, deal generally with defaulters. Rule 11 states that no person who has been declared a defaulter by the society shall be eligible to be elected a member of any affiliated club until the suspension has been re-

moved. The Eden District Cricket Club has again engaged A. E. Relf, the English professional, as coaeli for the season, lie should arrive here just before the season opens next month. At the annual meeting of the Auckland Cricket Association a motion was carried that it be a suggestion to the incoming management committee that the association appoint an advisory committee of junior players to grade junior players and teams, arrange the draw, arrange the junior representative matches, and control junior cricket generally, all the actions and measures taken by this committee to be ratified by the management committee of the Association. The opinion generally held among juniors was that all the attention of the management committee was focussed on the seniors, but such a change as had been suggested would be beneficial to cricket generally. It would give juniors a greater interest in the game. It was also suggested that the management committee might consider the advisableness of awarding the club championship to the club scoring the greatest number of points in all grades, instead of, as at present, on the senior result. It was believed it would Im> an incentive to young players. Tlie president said the suggestion was well worth consideration. The City Club's area was also enlarged for the season, and a committee appointed to revise the cricket boundaries. Several cricket enthusiasts have been busy for some days past in collecting subscriptions towards purchasing a cricket banner and case to be held by the winning school team of the season.
