THE COMMONWEALTH TARIFF.

CONTROVERSY IN ENGLAND. A warm controversy is being conducted in the columns of the Times, relative to the Australian Government's tariff proposals. A correspondent signing himself "Zollvercin" declares: "Mr Deakin 's the bondsman of the Labor Party, and the tariff' shows his complete subjugation to Labor. Mr Deakin shed his Imperialist ideals of tariff reform in Australia. Those ideals were only a stalking-horse for protection." A correspondent, "Tariff' Reform," .i----dicules the idea of the Labor Party im[losing the tariff' on Mr Deakin. He contends that the policy which the bulk of Australia supports must have something to say for itself.
