Mr. B. H. Nicholls, manager of the Moa Farmers' Union, who has been ;11 for a week, was able to attend again at the office yesterday. Yates, ex-Mayor of Onehungi, continues in a bad state of health, but has been removed from a private hospital to her home (says a Press Association telegram from Auckland). Mr James Mackay, Chief Inspector of iaetories, died at Wellington on Sunday night. Deceased, who was fifty years of age, joined the Labor Department when it was formed in 1801. The f'ev. Howie, a passenger by the Wimmera from the Willi', was found dead in his cabin during the voyage to Melbourne. Death was due to natural causes. Deceased joined the Wimmera at Duncdin. He was 70 years of age. Mr. Thomas Henry Smith, ex-Judge of the Native Land Court, died yesterday at Auckland, aged 83 years. He had resided in the colony since 1842, retiring from the public service in 1878. —Press wire.

The Mayor said he regretted the fatality very much, for Mr l'ikett had given promise of becoming a very useful councillor. His progressive views had been shown by the manner in which he had taken up the juatter of providing a tramway system. He moved "That this Council place on record its deep regret at the untimely death of Councillor Pikctt, and tender its sympathy and condolence with the widow and" family of the deceased councillor." Cr. Collis seconded, and*ask3d that the Mayor's remarks of appreciation should be entered iu the minutes. This the Mayor agreed to, and the motion was carried, the members standing.
