TURF TOPICS. (By "Moturoa.") L. Wilson steered three winners .it Hulls, If. Price notched two victories, and W. lli'ggins, Young, C. Jenkins, Hercock, Kemp, G. Jones, A. McConnon, S. Rcid, Murfitt, and W. Price piloted one winner apiece. The Horowhcnua Cup winner lliru added another first and a dead heat for the same position to his credit. He is a good "miler." The undersized Pilgrim's Progress colt Koran scored a long overdue victory in the Welter Handicap. Waitapu was catching the leaders in the September Handicap at every stride when he stumbled at the entrance to the straight. Merriwee's three-year-old son Comedian was the finest-looking horse on the course, and should scoop in some coin I this season. .Mauri is an indifferent jumper, but travels fast lielvveeu the obstacles. The hurdles at Rangitikei were ridiculously low ones, and leaned far over as if wearily pointing the way to the winning-post.
The Bulls course was simply alive I with all sorts and sizes of motor-cars, puffers, snorters, and runabouts on Thursday last. The waggonette and the bullock-dray, familiar sights at this meeting a few years ago, have been thrown with much violence into the "old iron" heap. A raeeenurse detec-live ami the 100 l "cops." held the gates and hunted oil' hordes of spielers, bookies, "Uiree-eard" men, thimble-riggers, and other gentry who 1 lied to gain admission. (Some two hundred were "barred." The crowd on the course was consequently a very "naiee," select one, and contained no "impossible" persons.
A new rule which was put into operation at the Rangitikei Spring Meeting should meet with the hourly approval of jockeys in particular and sportsmen generally. The decree comes under seclion 3. part 22, of the Rules of Racing, and reads: '\\"o jockey shall lie weighed out for any race unless the amount nf his minimum fee, as for a losing mount in the race, has been previously deposited with the secretary or clerk of the -'•ales, or other ollicial appointed by the stewards for that purpose. If he wins, the balance of his fee shall he deducted from the slake, otherwise payable to the owner, and shall be paid to him. The club shall be responsible to the jockey for his minimum fee under these
rules, less 2'/L- per cent, thereon, to be deducted liy the club for collecting anil paying, and for the responsibility hereby imposed." The "bustler" won't be able lo "balance" his jockey any more. Til the good old days the lads often had to whistle for their fees—in fact, some were quite expert "whistlers"!
