LOCAL AND GENERAL.

. Jhe Stratford Post learns that several important lines of timber have been advanced m price by the Taranaki Sawmillers Association, and the increased scale will come into force on October Ist. A -clller secured some poisoned wheat lie oilier day to cope with the smallbirds nuisance. He couldn't see any ru"iilt, so he concluded the poison was inHlcetiVe. Jle fed it to the ducks, with ni"»l disastrous results. A ratepayer who waited on the Moa Load board mi Saturday about a road »a» asked. ••Haven't you the u-:e of the road now?" "Yes," h c said, "r have 1 sowed it down in grass last week, ami 1 got a good turnip crop off it last year " that road seems to be a road only on the map. The amount taken at the sale of work at Fitzroy in aid of funds for enlarging Trinity Church Schoolroom was between Uri and £33. At a ratepayers' meeting near IngleU'ood the other day a settler remarked that "until ruiul board members arc paid we'll re/vcr have good nu'ii on tli;> boards." Whilst we don't agree with the sentiment, it seems only fair that road board members should have their day's expenses just as do county councillors and hospital board members. The Theatre Roval was packed last evening, when the Salvation Army Biorama Company showed a series of pictures depicting Biblical scenes, including the lives of Christ and Moses. Two songs were rendered by Lieutenant Stevens. The company give their final programme in the Theatre to-night. The programme will include the following items: "Dolly's Rescue," "Wreck of the Mary Jane, "The, Runaway Van," "Fox-hunt-ing in England,* '"The Tyrant," "The Woman's Love."

The Audit Department charged the \ Moa Road Hoard £3 odd for nine and a-half hours' auditing of the account. When the account was presented on Saturday, one of the members remarked that it was "a pretty good screw." The chairman assured the Board that the Audit Inspector didn't get all the fees. '•Then," remarked Mr. Chamncy, "the Government makes money out of it." The chairman said that didn't necessarily follow. The money went to pay the other officials who did no work. Mr. Chnyiney interrupted that that was often the case. Mr. Trimble then finished what he intended to say —that these officials did no work in connection with the actual auditing. In view of the expectation that the tram question would come before the Ilawera County Council on Saturday, and to show that the Ilawera people are willing to take an interest in the matter by assisting the County Council, a movement was started on Saturday morning to get up a guarantee list, says the Star. Messrs E. Dixon and Robbins took round , a list, and in an hour or so made a partial canvass with very satisfactory., results. Nearly, everyone waited on was found willing to assist, and the guarantee towards interest during the first three years of the tram was freely signed. Between £3OO and £4OO was subscribed. Only a partial canvass was made, because time did not admit of the two gentlemen who. started it seeing everyone. With more time and addii tional canvassers the amount can Jio . doubt be increased.
