DOMINION DAY.
Per Press Association. Timaru, .Last Niglit. A meeting ■of citizens determined to . celebrate Dominion Day without inter- 'A foring with the course of business — H reading the declaration formally at 11 -{ a.m. and again in the afternoon during ; the usual half-holiday. Protests were made on behalf of uusinesa people and the schools against increasing the number of holidays, and the town school committees refused to give more than a half-holiday. A compromise was therefore effected. Palmerston N., Last Night. In spite of the decision to the contrary arrived at at a meeting of citizens on Wednesday, it has now been decided to celebrate Dominion Day by having a monster parade, in which three volun- " tecr corps, the Fire Brigade, and other local bodies will take part. The day, however, will not be a public holiday owing to the opening of the new hospital ward by His Excellency the previous day. Wellington, Last Night. A number of business men were interviewed here to-day in regard to the question of observing a holiday on Dominion Day. The general opinion expressed was against an additional holiday, and that if Dominion Day is to be celebrated annually, Labor Day should lie held on the same date, or even the King's Birthday treated similarly. It is admitted, however, that there would be a difficulty in reconciling the Labour jparty with this arrangement.
