PARIHAKA ROAD BOARD.

A special meeting of the Parihaka Road Board was held on Thursday morning, there being present—Messrs Jas. loung (chairman), P. Willcox, M. Deogan and A. Chapman. A special order in connection with the proposed bye-law prohibiting bullock ■traffic on roads during May, June, July and August was passed, to come into force in April next. Mr Jas. Young was appointed to affix the Board's seal to the bye-law, and the clerk was instructed to forward a copy of the resolution to the Minister of Public Works. Ihaia Road Loan: The foreman reported that it would take £1350 to carry out the necessary formation and metalling required on this road. The Public Trustee was finding £250, leaving the settlers to raise- f 1100 by loan. He recommended that the petition be forwarded to Mr W. Humphries to obtain necessary signatures.—The report was adopted.

The foreman, Mr A. J. Portcoua, was granted a week's leave of absence, and Mr Dan Anglcsca was appointed temporary foreman.

Upper Opourapa Loan: Special order for proposed Upper Orourapa loan of £450 was passed. General Rate: Mr Willcox moved in accordance with notice of motion that it is the intention of the Board to strike a half-penny rate in the £. This was seconded by Mr J. Young. Mr Chapman, in moving an amendment for a three-farthing rate, said he was of opinion that the half-penny rate was not enough to keep the roads in repair. He would sooner pay ,jin extra rate than have to cart metal on the road, as he and many other settlers had to do at present. Mr Young said that many ratepayers were in favor of a higher rate. Very shortly, however, the district would bo divided into wards, asd each ward whose roads were in debt could strike a higher rate without doin» injustice to those wards whose roads were in credit.—The amendment was not seconded, and the motion was carried. The Board decided to accept an offer made for the larger of their two safes, and the clerk was instructed to purchase another large safe at a cost not to exceed £4O.
