GOOD TEMPLARY
ANNIVERSARY OF THE EGMONT LODGE. / The Egmont Lodge, No. 112, 1.0. G.T., celebrated its thirty-fourth anniversary on Thursday night at St. Mary's Hall. Ihe first part of the proceedings took the form of an open Lodge meeting, ill winch a large number of members, sympathisers, and representatives of kindred societies were present. Among those present were the Mayor (Mr E. Docknil) and Mrs Dockrill. Bro. J. 0. Lew C. 1., presided. The secretary presented a report showing the progress of the Lodge since its formation in September, 1873. The Lodge worked on and grew, until in 1885 it had 300 members. For some reason it then became defunct, and efforts t» revive it failed until Bros. Legg and Stokes undertook tho task successfully In 1000. During the past year open meetings had been held, with great success, and the membership had increased in the past twelve months from 55 to 100—almost double. A Juvenile Temple had been formed, under the charge of Sister Mrs Bruce.
The Chairman said he felt that the time had arrived when a temperance hall should bo erected, and he hoped that at next meeting of the Lodge a committee would be set up to devise ways and means.
Mr G. H. Maunder, on behalf of the No-License League, spoke on the necessity for continuous work in fighting the drink traffic.
Mrs Douglas, president of the Women's Christian Temperance Union, congratulated the Lodge on its progress, and promised the help of the Union in the erection of a temperance hall, which was most urgently needed. Mrs Douglas urged the right of women to take a prominent part in temperance work for Cod, home, and humanity. Pro. J. 0. Legg delivered a short address on "When is a Lodge successful?" Ihe answer was, brielly, when it reclaimed the drunkards and kept them in temperance. Bro. Hartncll, P.C.T., and Bro. A. E Stokes, Lodge Deputy, delivered short I addresses on temperance work. THE BANQUET.
Nearly a hundred sat down to the banquet, which was presided over by Bro. Legg, the Mayor and Mayoress occupying the positions of honor. A splendid repast was provided by the Hygienic Bakery, and was excellently served. The hall and the tables were lavishly decorated. _ The following toast list was honored in bumpers of prohibition beverages:— "The King," proposed by the Chairman; "■the Grand Lodge oi New Zealand," proposed by Bro. A. R. Stokes, response by Bro. R. C. Hughes; "Egmont Lodge sub-Lodges, and Juvenile Work," proposed by Mr F. Goodacre, responses by Bro. Hartnell and Sister Bruce; "Good lomplar Orphanage," proposed by Ero J. Higgs, response by the Chairman; Kindred Societies," proposed by Mr (i ,L ™ undor ' ni V msc »y Mrs Douglas (W.C.T.U.), Mr A. Rich (N.Z. Alliance), and F. Goodacre (Unity Tent of Reehabites); "Our Guests," proposed by Bro F. R. Pepperill, response by the Mayor and Mr F. Wilson; "The Ladies," proposed by Bro. J. A. Roberts, response bv Sister E White; "The Press," proposed by His Worship the Mayor; and "The Chairman," proposed by Bro. Hartnell; 'lhe Orchestra," proposed by the chairman. Between the toasts an excellent programme was submitted, consisting of orchestral items by Mr E. A. Golding (piano), Mr H. Salt (violin), Mr R Deare (flute), and Mr P. G. Blanchett (clarionet); violin solo, Miss Dowlinnvocal quartette, Misses Loeseli and Sofe', Messrs Clarke and Jenkinson; vocal duets, Messrs. Clark and Jenkinson; vocal solos, Miss Loesch, Messrs Harris and Clark; recitations, Misses Dowljng and B. Legg, and Mr Thompson.
