A NEW INDUSTRY.

CONDENSED MILK FACTORY FOR 'TARANAKI, An industry which promises to improve dairy fanning in Taranaki is likely to be established before very, long. Mr H. J. Preston, general man- . ager for Australia and New Zealand of I the Nestle and Anglo-Swiss Condensed Milk Company, acoinpanied by Mr R. T. Worth, manager of one of the comI pauy's large factories in Cheshire, ha.j been /making a tour of the colonies for the purpose of selecting suitable centres for the establishment of factories. They have purchased a site in Queensland; and a few days ago in Taranaki, and,! recommonded their board of directors I to purchase them. Asked by a Wei-1 lington Post representative why they chose Taranaki in preference to any' other part of the colony, Mr Preston replied that they required close settlemont, a plentiful supply of water, anda fairly equal supply of milk in both' the summer and winter seasons. These conditions, he said, were more likely toi }io obtained in Taranaki than In the ' South. In fact, they were of opinion ! that Taranaki could produce a condens- ; ed milk equally as good as the Swiss article, Because the natural conditions of the country were so good. In Swifc I

- zerlanfd they had their cows 1 stabled for eight or nine months of {he year, U and had to milk them in the stables. r Hero the cows got more fresh air, and . the bails could be kept much cleanelr. , In order to get the farmers to produce , milk for them, they intended offering a I price much higher than the price 01-' tained at butter and cheese factories' i They could not give the farmer back his skim milk, aril they would have to compensate him lor that, and pay liW so that cleanliness and quality in milk would |l>e assured. "The essence of our contract with the dairy farmer,'* said -Mr Preston, "is cleanliness .and; purity." The company would have their own inspectors to go round. AMd see that the contracts were being carvied out to the letter.
