WARRIMOO ASHORE.
STRANDED DURING A FOG. NEAR FAREWELL SPIT LIGHTHOUSE. JtN FAIRLY SHELTERED POSITION. MARAROA AND ROTOITI DESPATCHED TO ASSIST. t Per Press Association. Nelson, Sunday, Midnight. j News has been received that __ the Union Company's steamer Warrimoo ran ashore at Cape Farewell, close to the lighthouse, about 6 o'clock this i evening, the weather then being foggy, with rain. > Under the regulations, light-keepers are not permitted to give information,' so particulars cannot be got. The- steamer Rotoiti is being despatched to the scene. It is understood all on board are safe, Wellington, Monday, 1 a.m. The Warrimoo, which left Lyttelton on Saturday night for Newcastle, and to search for the Monowai on route, went ashore at Cape Farewell this evening. She is in smooth water, and in a somewhat sheltered position, though m hard southerly is Mowing. No further details arc to hand. The Mararoa is proceeding to the., scene as soon as possible to endeavor to tow the Warrimoo off. Farewell Spit, the north-westerly ex" tvemity of tho South Island, is comprised of a long neck of sand dunes running in a northerly 'direction. As tie •VVnrrhnoo was some distance off her usual course, it is not unlikely thatl the vessel was standing in to the light-' house in order to learn whether thing ha<d been heard of the Monowai,, before leaving the coast of New Zea-' land to engage in the search. In the* fog and .rain prevailing, she no doubt found herself in shallow water before the fact was realised. =——-=
