Mesrs Ilarland and Wolff have obtained the contract for the contraction of a new White Star liner. The vessel will be 840 ft in length, and will have a displacement of 40,000 tons. Mr Archibald Blount, of Orlcton, Herefordshire, out of a fortune of £-)3,514, bequeathed £BO,OOO to the Yale University (United States). A petition is being signed in New Caledonia urging the French Government to band the island over to Great Britain. The petitioners believe £hat if they were under British rule they would soon acquire autonomy. The local P'incr France Anstrale ridicules the petition, but warns France that she bas crushed the dependency by imposts beyond its resources, and tb-it she may lose her colonies as Spain did.
A youth named MePae fell down a disused shaft at Broken Hill, and remninert there for five days before he w-s found. He is now in the hospital in a critical condition.
