A YOUNG GIRLS MARRIAGE.
HUSBAND COMMITTED FOR TRIAL. Hegwßme, August 30. A young man, William Gregory, was committed for trial by the City Court to-day on a charge of havirg married Vera May Millard, aged 19, without the consent of her parents. The mother of the girl stated that the accused, who had boarded with her in Rnsaell street, married the girl for the purpose of obtaining the money •he was entitled to when she came of age. She found him looking through documents relating to the estate of witness' deceased husband, and he expressed pleasure on ducoTering that Vera would come into the money. Witness ordered him from the house, but he refused to go. Detective Ashton stated that accused was arrested in Sydney on August 16, and the girl had told kirn that they had Sne to Sydney under the names of iss Bromley and Mr Patterson to evade being traced. Gregory, in his defeaee, said that he had kept company with the girl for three months, with the consent of her mother. When he was waiting for Vera in the street one day to escort her home, her mother caught her by the ear and dragged her along the street, and caused great commotion. He had not awn any papers regarding the property, and was not aware that the girl was entitled to money. He had married the girl honorably. He didn't know that she was under 21. In answer to questions witness said he cam* from New Zealand, and had a position to no to in Sydney. b Accused was allowed bail in JE2OO.
